Tips for Winning Cover Letters
Take time to find out the name (make sure it is correct and do not misspell it!) of the person who deals closely with employment. "Dear Sir / Madam" or "To whom it may concern" is only a last resort option!
"Advertise yourself" in the letter of intent, keep the same tone of voice throughout the whole letter and never forget to talk only about yourself and your accomplishments, not those of your previous employer in general, if you had nothing to do with them. You do not have to include the name in the body of the letter because you will sign it at the end.
Avoid writing an interminable letter
Use only one page to maintain the interest of the reader.
Individualize each letter, even if you use a common pattern. Using a sentence or two in which to express your interest for that particular position and company is indicated. And do not copy the letter of intent from elsewhere.
Make a good first impression
Begin your letter with something special instead of the usual "I am writing to apply ..." or "I attached my resume ...." If possible, try to introduce yourself in the first paragraph.
Show the interviewer that you have done your homework and you're aware of the needs of his company or business Be sincere in your praise, but do not overdo it! Moreover, do not lie! A potential employer will catch on to your lies during the first interview.

It goes without saying that a letter full of spelling mistakes will fail. Letters of intent with errors like "please receive me and this letter of intent" will be thrown at the recycle bin after the first spelling mistake. Nobody wants illiterate employees.
When you send a letter to inquire about job opportunities, include relevant information and personal skills to show the employers that you deserve their time for a discussion with you, even if they planned to hire someone at that time.
When you write a letter, make sure you mention how you will accomplish what you will be required to do in your job.
Express your confidence and ability to think positively
Do not dwell on something negative, highlight what you can do best. At the same time, avoid exaggerating your level of experience. Two part time jobs in a store do not make you a sales director.
Request an appointment
End the letter with a paragraph that shows what you want to do.
Take initiative and ask for an interview and/or your intention to call in a week or two. Note the date on which you have proposed to call. You can even leave a message, but make sure you keep your word and that you are punctual.
Check the letter several times
Check again and again for punctuation, sentence structure and logic.
Get support from someone who knows better if you are not sure that your grammar is correct. Make sure the final letter is completely professional.
Use standard formats for letters that match your resume. Use a quality printer if you don't send it by e-mail or fax.
Finally, check the number of sentences that begin with "I". If there are too many, rephrase some of them!
